Plumstead substance attack: manhunt for suspect continues, police confirm no arrests

Published at 1:30pm

The hunt for the person responsible for a substance attack on a man in Plumstead is continuing, with police confirming no arrests have been made.

A man in his 40s suffered facial injuries when an unknown substance was thrown at him on Plumstead Common Road in south east London at around 6.35am on Sunday morning.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was rushed to hospital. His injuries were later assessed as neither life-threatening nor life-changing.

## Investigation under way

Officers from the Metropolitan Police attended the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service in the early hours of Sunday.

A police spokesperson said forensic and CCTV enquiries were being carried out urgently to identify the person responsible. Police have said they are treating the attack as an isolated incident, and that they understand it will be of concern to the local community.

On Tuesday, police confirmed there had been no further updates and that no arrests had been made in connection with the investigation.

## What remains unclear

The type of substance thrown at the victim has not been publicly disclosed, and police have not said whether they believe the victim and attacker knew each other.

Plumstead Common Road is a busy residential route running through the heart of Plumstead, close to Plumstead Common itself. Attacks involving thrown substances are rare in the area, which is likely why the incident has drawn significant attention from residents.

Substance attacks — sometimes involving corrosive materials — are treated extremely seriously by police because of the potential for life-changing injuries. Anyone who witnessed the attack, or who was in the area of Plumstead Common Road around 6.35am on Sunday morning and may have dashcam or doorbell footage, is urged to contact police.

## No further updates yet

As of Wednesday, enquiries remain ongoing and no further details about the suspect or the substance involved have been released. London Streets will update this story when police provide more information.

## How these investigations usually unfold

Substance attacks are investigated as serious assaults, and the early stages follow a well-established pattern. Forensic teams work to identify the substance involved — both to understand what happened and because the type of material can narrow down where it may have come from.

Detectives then trawl CCTV from shops, buses and homes along the route, and appeal for doorbell and dashcam footage from the surrounding streets. Plumstead Common Road is lined with homes and small businesses, so investigators will be hoping someone’s camera caught the moments before or after the attack at 6.35am.

If you were in the area early on Sunday morning — walking, driving, or waiting at a bus stop — even a small detail could matter. The time of the attack, just after dawn on a Sunday, means the streets would have been quiet, and witnesses may be few.

Anyone with information can contact the Metropolitan Police directly. As always, never approach someone you believe may be involved — leave that to officers.
