British Transport Police have now confirmed fresh details about Monday night’s crash, which happened at the level crossing at Acton Central station. Officers were called to Churchfield Road at around 10.30pm on Monday, September 28, after a car drove through the level crossing barriers and overturned.

The driver was taken to hospital and arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. He was later further arrested on suspicion of drink driving, criminal damage and endangering the safety of people on the railway.

A woman who was passing the crossing on foot was injured by debris from the collision and was also taken to hospital. Her injuries are not life-threatening or life-changing, police said.

The road has since reopened.

Two people were taken to hospital after a late-night crash on East Churchfield Road in Acton, with the road remaining closed into Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to Churchfield Road at 10.22pm on Monday, September 28, after reports of a road traffic collision. The London Ambulance Service sent two ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars and an incident response officer to the scene.

Two patients treated at the scene

Paramedics treated two patients at the roadside before taking them to hospital. One patient was taken to a major trauma centre as a priority, while the second was conveyed to a local hospital.

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said: “We sent two ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars and an incident response officer to the scene. We treated two patients at the scene. We took one of the patients to a major trauma centre as a priority and we took the other patient to a local hospital.”

No further details about the conditions of the two patients have been released.

East Churchfield Road remains closed

East Churchfield Road remains closed westbound from Perryn Road to Goldsmith Road while the crash is dealt with. The closure was put in place late on Monday night and was still in force on Tuesday morning.

The road closure was first reported on Monday night, with drivers warned to avoid the area and find alternative routes while emergency services remained at the scene.

What happens after a serious crash

When a collision leaves people seriously hurt, police will typically keep the road closed so specialist collision investigators can examine the scene undisturbed. Officers map the carriageway, record the positions of vehicles and debris, measure skid marks and sightlines, and gather any available CCTV or dashcam footage. Investigators can also use 3D laser scanners to build a digital reconstruction of the scene, a painstaking process that can take several hours to complete.

The findings of such investigations can determine whether anyone faces further action: elsewhere in west London, a fatal collision in Southall led to a man being charged as detectives appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The circumstances of the crash have now been confirmed by British Transport Police, and the driver has been arrested — see the update above. Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who was driving in the area with a dashcam on Monday night, can contact British Transport Police.

How long closures like this usually last

Roads shut after serious-injury collisions are often closed for several hours — and sometimes well into the following day — while investigators finish their work at the scene. Even once the road reopens, drivers can face residual delays as traffic gets moving again, and closures of this kind often lead to bus diversions and knock-on delays on neighbouring routes.

It is not the first crash to cause disruption on Acton’s roads in recent days: a separate collision blocked Bollo Bridge Road in Acton, leaving traffic building and buses diverted around the scene.

Morning commute disruption around Acton Central

With East Churchfield Road still shut westbound between Perryn Road and Goldsmith Road, drivers who would normally use the route are being pushed onto surrounding streets during the Tuesday morning rush. The closure sits close to Acton Central, where commuters joining the North London line could also feel the knock-on effects if connecting bus services are held up in diverted traffic.

Drivers heading through Acton on Tuesday morning are advised to allow extra time, consider alternative routes and check for updates before setting off.

This is a developing story. Further updates will follow as more details are confirmed.
