Woman arrested after fatal crash in Enfield as police appeal for witnesses

Published at 11:50am

A woman has been arrested following the Enfield fatal collision which claimed the life of a 48-year-old man and left another man fighting for his life in hospital.

Emergency services were called to Chase Side, N14, at around 12.40am on Saturday 20 September after reports of a crash involving a car and a pedestrian. Officers were joined at the scene by the London Ambulance Service, the London Fire Brigade and London’s Air Ambulance.

Several people were taken to hospital to have their injuries assessed. The 48-year-old, a passenger in the vehicle, has since died, and his next of kin are being supported by specially trained officers. A second passenger, a man aged 31, remains in hospital in a life-threatening condition.

The Met said a 32-year-old woman was arrested on Monday 21 September on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving with a specified controlled drug above the prescribed limit. She was arrested again during her interview on suspicion of failing to stop, and has since been released on bail while enquiries continue. She has not been charged.

Detectives from the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Detective Inspector Simon Ager said the thoughts of officers remain with the man’s family and loved ones as they come to terms with a devastating loss, adding that any information could prove vital to the investigation.

Anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have recorded CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage, is asked to call police on 101 quoting reference 259/20SEP. Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

It follows a similar witness appeal issued after a man aged 68 died in a van collision in Southall. A separate West Norwood collision also left a man dead.

The Metropolitan Police published the witness appeal on its official newsroom, where the full release can be read here.
