Detectives are appealing for witnesses after a 68-year-old man died when he was struck by a van in Southall on Tuesday afternoon.
Police were called to Emerald Square, Southall, at about 1.38pm on Tuesday, 22 September, following reports of a collision between a van and a pedestrian. Officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade and London’s Air Ambulance, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. No name has been released.
A 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while disqualified. He has since been released on bail while enquiries continue. He has not been charged, and the investigation is at an early stage.
A crime scene was put in place around Emerald Square as detectives from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit began working to establish the full circumstances of what happened.
Detective Inspector Fiaz Janjua, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said:
“This is a tragic incident in which a man has sadly lost his life.”
“Our thoughts remain with the man’s family and loved ones as they come to terms with this devastating loss.”
“While we have already made one arrest in connection with this incident, we are now working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision and are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.”
“I would also urge anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have captured footage on CCTV, dashcam, mobile phone or doorbell cameras, to contact police as this information could prove vital to our investigation.”
Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who was in Emerald Square at the time, or who was driving through the area and may have caught something on camera.

The fatal collision is the second in the borough to prompt a police witness appeal in a matter of days. Earlier this month, a 17-year-old boy died in a single-car crash on South Road, Southall, in which a 20-year-old man has been charged. Police appeals for information are a regular feature of serious investigations in the capital — the Met recently renewed a witness appeal two years after a 13-year-old girl was raped in Bethnal Green.
