Wembley nightclub loses licence for good after shooting on Douglas Avenue

Published at 8:11am

A Wembley nightclub has been forced to shut for good after a shooting on a nearby street left a man with potentially life-changing injuries.

Spice Klub, also known as VT Club and Basement, has had its premises licence revoked by Brent Council, following a hearing of the council’s alcohol and entertainment licensing subcommittee on Wednesday, November 4.

Police were called to Douglas Avenue, between Wembley Central and Alperton, following the gun incident at around 3.35am on Saturday, October 3. A 24-year-old man was found injured and taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed to London Now a week after the incident that the man’s injuries were “potentially life changing”.

The sound of quick-fire gunshots was captured on doorbell camera footage from the same street, showing people running in different directions.

The club’s licence was initially suspended last month as a result of the shooting. Following the subcommittee meeting on November 4, the licence has now been revoked altogether, meaning the venue cannot trade under it again.

A Brent Council spokesperson said: “Following today’s licensing hearing, the sub-committee has decided to revoke the premises licence for Spice Klub Wembley. The existing interim suspension will remain in place while the revocation decision takes effect. The council will continue to work closely with the police and other partners to help keep residents and visitors safe.”

Revocation is the strongest sanction a licensing subcommittee can impose. When police raise concerns about a venue following a serious incident, the council can first impose an interim suspension, shutting the premises while the case is reviewed. A full hearing then considers evidence from the police, the council and the licence holder before deciding whether to reinstate the licence, impose new conditions, or revoke it entirely. Licensing hearings are held in public, and the subcommittee’s decisions can be appealed to the magistrates’ court.

There have been no confirmed arrests in connection with the shooting and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information, or who was in the area at the time, is urged to call police on 101, quoting reference 1115/3OCT.

The shooting is the latest violent incident in north-west London to reach the courts and licensing hearings, following a stabbing at Harrow on the Hill station that left three people injured and a fire at a family home on Eagle Road in Wembley.
