The Metropolitan Police is investigating two more rape allegations against Russell Brand, with files submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, hours after he was found guilty of rape and three sexual assaults.
Brand, 51, was convicted at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday of raping a woman after a 2009 stand-up show, and of sexually assaulting three other women between 2004 and 2009. He was acquitted of two further rapes and one count of attempted indecent assault, and was remanded in custody until sentencing on Monday.
A Met spokesperson said: “The Met’s investigation into allegations of rape made by two women remains ongoing. Files have been submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service in relation to both complainants. Detectives remain in close contact with prosecutors as enquiries continue and further investigative work is carried out.”
The suspect has previously been interviewed under caution in connection with the allegations, police said.
What is known about the two complaints
The court heard that one complaint comes from a woman who dated Brand when he was 30, and the other from a woman who was 16 at the time of the alleged offence. The prospect of further charges was raised in court hearings in March and May, when Brand’s legal team sought assurances that new charges would not be brought shortly before the trial.
Two other allegations were previously reviewed by prosecutors but did not meet the evidential threshold, according to reports.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who led the Met’s investigation, said: “Brand used his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women.” He said more people may now come forward following the guilty verdicts, describing Brand as a danger to women.
How the case reached court
The Met began investigating after allegations against Brand were reported by Channel 4’s Dispatches, The Times and The Sunday Times in September 2023. Brand was charged and stood trial at Southwark Crown Court, where a jury of eight men and four women deliberated for eight and a half hours before returning its verdicts on Thursday.
He will be sentenced on Monday 9 November, with rape carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. No date has been set for any decision on the two further allegations, which remain with prosecutors.
