Wandsworth drivers face 20mph limit on Swandon Way and roundabout under TfL plan

Published at 5:15pm

Transport for London plans to introduce a new 20mph speed limit on roads in Wandsworth, cutting the current 30mph limit on the A217 Swandon Way, Wandsworth Roundabout and several side roads.

The proposed changes would affect the A217 Swandon Way, Wandsworth Roundabout, and several side roads. These roads currently have a speed limit of 30mph.

The changes are being made under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and are designed to cover specific sections of the A217 Swandon Way and the roundabout at its junctions with Bridgend Road (A217), York Road (A3205), Swandon Way (A217), and Trinity Road (A214).

The affected roads are all part of the Greater London Authority (GLA) network and include GLA Main Roads and all GLA Side Roads — Red Route returns of these roads.

The plans have been formally announced and local residents and businesses have until November 13 to provide their feedback or objections. These must be submitted in writing by post or email, quoting reference NP/REGULATION/STOT/LL/TRO, GLA/2026/0688.

TfL has also made all relevant documents, including a map of the affected areas, available for inspection online at haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/tro and by appointment at their office.

TfL’s own lowering-speed-limits programme confirms the Wandsworth change as part of its phase 4 works, due to commence in early 2027: the A217 Swandon Way, including Wandsworth Roundabout to Fairfield Street, will be reduced from 30mph to a 20mph speed limit.

The announcement comes as Central line passengers face severe delays over a Bond Street signal failure and plans emerge for Europe trains from Stratford International as early as 2030 — a busy week for London’s transport network.
