Building work is about to begin on a new £1.08 million GP surgery in Barking Riverside, east London’s largest new neighbourhood.
The modern practice will be created inside a 260 square metre commercial unit at Mulberry Circus in the Northgate neighbourhood, with construction firm Beardwell appointed to deliver the project.
The scheme is being delivered through a partnership between master developer Barking Riverside Limited (BRL), NHS North East London and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, as part of a wider push to expand healthcare in one of the capital’s fastest-growing communities.
“Bringing the practice forward has required close collaboration between BRL, NHS North East London and the council, and we’re pleased to now be working with Beardwell to turn those plans into reality,” said Leigh Johnson, development director at Barking Riverside Limited.
“As Barking Riverside continues to grow, it is vital that health infrastructure and services grow with it. This new GP practice responds directly to feedback from the wider community, strengthening access to primary care.”
Once open, the surgery will act as a temporary practice serving Barking Riverside and surrounding communities until further local health provision is delivered as part of the area’s wider masterplan.
The new surgery will include four consultation rooms and a specialist treatment room, offering a range of routine and urgent GP services to local residents.
Sarah See, managing director for primary care at NHS North East London, said the project would strengthen access to primary care for people living in and around the development.
Barking Riverside is being transformed from a former industrial site on the Thames into a major new neighbourhood, with thousands of homes planned alongside schools, transport links and community facilities.
The new GP surgery is the latest piece of health infrastructure to respond to that growth, and residents are expected to be able to register at the practice once construction is complete.
Local health news continues to make headlines across the capital — a new A&E department has been promised for Queen’s Hospital in Romford, while campaigners in Bexley have been pushing for better SEND support for families.
An opening date for the Mulberry Circus practice has not yet been confirmed.
