What we know so far

The crash happened on the M25 clockwise in Surrey during Monday morning’s rush hour — one of the busiest stretches of the London orbital motorway.

Four overhead signs between J8 and J9 were displaying collision warnings, and TomTom data recorded stationary traffic with delays reaching around 14 minutes by 6.36am and continuing to build.

The number of vehicles involved and whether anyone was injured had not been confirmed in the early updates, with the immediate picture focused on the scale of the disruption.

Advice for drivers

National Highways advises drivers to check conditions before travelling and to allow extra time for journeys through Surrey this morning. Drivers approaching the scene should slow down, keep a safe distance and follow signs and instructions from traffic officers.

Those with flexible plans may want to delay their journey or consider alternative routes until the carriageway is cleared and queues ease.

A troublesome stretch

The J8–J9 section of the M25 is no stranger to disruption. Just yesterday evening, a separate crash on the same stretch between J8 and J9 clockwise took nearly two hours to clear, according to traffic monitoring data.

The M25 has seen a string of incidents in recent days — for more on the motorway’s troubled week, see our earlier coverage of M25 clockwise delays after crashes at Swanley and Wisley and the A20 speeding fine appeal ruling.
