Evening commuters caught up as train hits buffer stop at Liverpool Street

Published at 3:21pm

Evening commuters are facing major disruption at London Liverpool Street after an out-of-service London Overground train collided with a buffer stop in the early hours.

Rory O’Neill, TfL’s General Manager for London Overground, said the train hit the buffer stop at Liverpool Street station at around 1am on Thursday, October 15.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution before later being discharged. A full investigation is now under way, with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch also expected to attend.

The incident, reported at around 5am, has resulted in the closure of platforms one to three at the station.

Greater Anglia, London Overground and Stansted Express services have been affected, with delays, cancellations and some trains diverted to start from or terminate at Stratford instead of Liverpool Street.

Passengers travelling between Liverpool Street and Hackney Downs face delays of up to 15 minutes, while a reduced Stansted Express and Cambridge North service is expected to operate between 3.15pm and 8pm.

Transport for London has warned that severe delays on the Weaver line are expected to continue into Friday while repairs are carried out.

The disruption is expected to last until at least the end of today and could continue to affect services tomorrow, October 16. Passengers are urged to check live departure boards before travelling.

Tickets are being accepted on a range of alternative routes at no extra cost, including on London Underground, Great Northern and Thameslink services. Full refunds are available for customers who decide not to travel.

London Streets has been covering the Northern and District line disruption and London Trams disruption today.
