Barking is getting a new convenience store tomorrow, as a brand-new Morrisons Daily opens its doors in Farr Avenue.
The store, in the Thames View area, will welcome its first customers on Thursday, October 15, after what the chain describes as a complete redesign of the building inside and out.
What shoppers can expect
The new Morrisons Daily will offer a mix of Morrisons own-brand products alongside branded favourites, with fresh food at the heart of the offer.
A Morrisons spokesperson said: “The new Morrisons Daily fresh food convenience store will offer customers a carefully tailored mix of Morrisons own brand products alongside branded favourites.”
“As well as new ranges, the store has received a complete redesign internally and externally incorporating Morrisons bright, modern branding.”
“Fresh food is at the heart of the store and we hope customers will love it.”
Grand opening
A poster circulated on Facebook invites local shoppers to the grand opening, reading: “You are cordially invited to our grand opening. Join us as we celebrate the opening of Thames View Morrisons Daily! Your local store, bringing you fresh food, great value and everyday essentials.”
The store will be located at units 1-3 in Farr Avenue.
Franchise model
The store will be run by franchisee Mark Gowrikaran, reflecting Morrisons’ growing use of the franchise model to expand its convenience estate.
Morrisons Daily stores are typically smaller-format convenience shops, distinct from the chain’s large supermarkets. The franchise approach allows local operators to run stores under the Morrisons brand, combining national buying power with local knowledge.
The model has been a key part of Morrisons’ growth strategy in recent years, with hundreds of Morrisons Daily stores now operating across the UK — many converted from former McColl’s shops after Morrisons acquired that chain.
Why Barking, why now
Barking and the wider Thames View area have seen significant residential development in recent years, with thousands of new homes built or planned. New housing brings new demand for local shops, and convenience retailers have been quick to follow.
The Farr Avenue location sits in a residential area where a well-stocked convenience store can become a genuine community hub — somewhere residents pop in daily for fresh food and essentials rather than making a weekly trip to a big supermarket.
For local shoppers, the arrival of a Morrisons Daily means more choice and competition. Convenience stores live or die on their fresh food offer, and Morrisons has been pushing its fresh credentials as a point of difference against rivals.
The convenience battleground
London’s convenience sector is fiercely competitive. The big supermarket brands — Tesco Express, Sainsbury’s Local, Co-op and Morrisons Daily — compete with independent shops, symbol groups and discounters for the top-up shop.
What separates the winners is usually fresh food quality, value and location. A store that gets those three right in a growing residential area like Thames View has every chance of thriving.
The complete redesign of the Farr Avenue building suggests Morrisons and its franchisee are investing seriously in making this store stand out from day one.
What it means for the high street
New store openings are always welcome news for local high streets, bringing footfall, jobs and investment. While a convenience store opening may not grab headlines like a major development, these are the shops that keep neighbourhoods alive day to day.
The Thames View Morrisons Daily opens tomorrow — and if the fresh food lives up to the billing, Barking shoppers are in for a treat.
