A 22-year-old man has been charged with rape over the Covent Garden attack on a woman in her 20s in the early hours of a Saturday morning last month.
Christopher Rocha, 22, of Kilburn Lane, Westminster, was arrested and charged on suspicion of rape and intentional strangulation, the Metropolitan Police said.
The incident is said to have taken place in Macklin Street, near the heart of Covent Garden, in the early hours of Saturday, 22 August, when the woman was reportedly attacked.
From appeal to arrest: the Covent Garden rape charge
The case had been the subject of a public appeal at the end of August, when detectives released CCTV images of a man they needed to identify and speak to in connection with the attack. The appeal identified Macklin Street as the scene and asked anyone who recognised the man in the images to come forward.
That appeal has now resulted in an arrest and charge. The police said Rocha was arrested and subsequently charged in connection with the reported attack.
The development marks the moment the case passed from an active investigation into the court system. Charging decisions in cases of this kind are made where investigators believe there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to prosecute.
Court appearance
Rocha appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, 12 September. Cases involving serious charges such as rape are typically sent from the magistrates’ court to the Crown Court, which deals with the most serious criminal cases.
He was remanded in custody — meaning he will remain in custody ahead of his next court appearance — and is due to appear at Wood Green Crown Court on Friday, 9 October.
