Drivers who rely on the A2 after dark will need a backup plan this week, with stretches of the route between London and Kent set to close overnight across four nights. The closures begin on Monday night and run through to Friday morning, hitting both eastbound and westbound carriageways as well as a string of slip roads.
Every closure runs from 8pm to 6am, with one exception, so daytime journeys should be unaffected. But anyone travelling in the evening or the early hours will meet barriers, with signed diversions guiding motorists around the shut sections. Motorists are being urged to plan ahead and allow extra time, and to remember that overnight works programmes can be changed at short notice.
Monday into Tuesday: the heaviest night
Seven separate closures are scheduled for the first night. On Monday 5 October, the westbound A2 closes between Whitfield and Barham, while the eastbound carriageway shuts between Adisham Road and Whitfield — both from 8pm until 6am on Tuesday morning. Three westbound slip roads are also out of action overnight: those at Gate services, Dunkirk and Roman Road. And drivers heading for the M25 will lose the westbound link from the Darenth Interchange to the clockwise M25 at junction 2.
Tuesday into Wednesday: six closures
A similar pattern follows on Tuesday night. The westbound carriageway between Whitfield and Barham and the eastbound stretch between Adisham Road and Whitfield both close from 8pm to 6am. The slip roads at Gate services, Dunkirk and Roman Road are shut again overnight, while the westbound exit slip at Whitfield closes a little later, from 9pm to 6am.
Wednesday into Thursday: five closures
Midweek brings a slightly lighter programme on the same core stretches. On Wednesday night the westbound A2 between Whitfield and Barham and the eastbound A2 between Adisham Road and Whitfield close from 8pm to 6am, alongside the westbound slip roads at Gate services, Dunkirk and Roman Road.

Thursday into Friday: works move to Singlewell
The final night shifts the focus. On Thursday night, both the exit and entry slips on the eastbound A2 at Singlewell close from 8pm to 6am on Friday. The eastbound carriageway also shuts between Whitfield and the Duke of York roundabout, while the westbound side closes from the Duke of York roundabout back to Whitfield. Westbound slip-road restrictions apply once more at Gate services, Dunkirk and Roman Road.
Diversions: stick to the signs
Signed diversion routes will be in place around every closure, and drivers are urged to follow them rather than improvising their own way through unfamiliar lanes. Sat-navs can and do send motorists down unsuitable minor roads when a main route closes, so keeping to the official signs is the safer bet — particularly in the dark. That advice applies well beyond Kent: with weekend road closures and bus diversions a regular feature of life in the capital, knowing your diversion etiquette is fast becoming an essential London driving skill.
How to beat the disruption
A few practical steps will take the sting out of the week. Check live traffic before you set off rather than assuming the road is open; build in an extra 20 to 30 minutes for any journey that touches the A2 after 8pm; keep the tank topped up so a longer diversion does not become a problem; and if your journey is flexible, consider travelling before the closures bite or waiting until after 6am. Commuters who can swap an evening trip for another night may find that the simplest fix of all.
It is also worth remembering that overnight works programmes are weather-dependent and can be rescheduled at short notice, so a stretch listed as open tonight could still be closed tomorrow. Checking again on the day remains the most reliable approach. The closures are being carried out as part of planned works on the route, and disruption is expected to be limited to the overnight hours.
Drivers in the wider area will know that disruption on the A2 rarely happens in isolation — recent incidents around Dartford and major improvement works such as the Gallows Corner flyover reopening show how quickly the road network in and around the capital can change. This week, at least, the message is simple: if you are out after 8pm, check the A2 first.
