A man has died following a collision on Curnick’s Lane in West Norwood, south London, after emergency crews raced to the scene on Thursday afternoon.
Paramedics were called to Curnick’s Lane, SE27, at 2.53pm on September 24 following reports of a road traffic collision. The first paramedic reached the scene within around six minutes of the emergency call being placed.
The London Ambulance Service sent a substantial response to the incident, including an ambulance crew, paramedics in fast response cars, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer.
The attendance of the service’s incident response officer alongside frontline crews underlined the seriousness of the call.
Despite desperate efforts by crews to save him, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 2.53pm yesterday (24 September) to reports of a road traffic collision in Curnick’s Lane, SE27.
“We sent an ambulance crew, paramedics in fast response cars, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer to the scene.
“The first paramedic arrived in around six minutes.
“Despite the efforts to save his life, a man sadly died at the scene.”
The Metropolitan Police confirmed it was aware of the incident and said officers would issue a further statement later today (September 25).
The circumstances of the collision remain under investigation. The man’s identity has not been released and police have not confirmed any further details at this stage.
Curnick’s Lane sits in a residential pocket of West Norwood, in the London Borough of Lambeth, an area better known for its Victorian terraces and village feel than for scenes of tragedy.
Roads policing officers routinely investigate serious collisions across the capital, and road closures with diversions for buses and other traffic often remain in place for several hours while evidence is gathered.
The fatal collision comes during a difficult week on the capital’s transport network. Emergency services also attended a serious crash on Tollington Road which blocked the A503 and threw bus services into chaos, while a person died after being hit by a train at Twickenham station. Both incidents prompted significant disruption as investigators worked at the scenes.
Enquiries into the West Norwood collision are continuing, and police are expected to release further details in due course.
